Toronto is the provincial capital of Ontario and the most populous city in Canada. Located in Southern Ontario on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario it is the fifth most populous municipality in North America. With 2,5 million residents, Toronto is at the heart of the Greater Toronto Area. Toronto is part of a closely populated region in Southern Ontario, also known as the Golden Horseshoe. In this region are living 8.1 million residents which represents nearly 25% of Canada's population.

Toronto is considered a global city and as Canada's economic capital it is one of the top financial centres in the world. Finance, business services, telecommunications, aerospace, transportation, media, arts, film, television production, publishing, software production, medical research, education, tourism and sports industries are Toronto's leading economic sectors.

Reflecting its role as a destination for immigrants, Toronto's population is cosmopolitan and international.  About 49% of the population were born outside of Canada. Toronto is consistently rated as one of the world's most livable cities, because of the city's low crime rates, clean environment, high standard of living, and friendly attitude to diversity.
